Cantacuzino Castle: An architectural gem in the heart of Bucegi
In the heart of the Bucegi Mountains lies one of Romania’s most spectacular architectural masterpieces, the Cantacuzino Castle. Located in the Zamora neighborhood, this Neo-Romanian castle stands proudly on the site of an old hunting lodge dating back to the 18th century, which served as a stopover for the Cantacuzino family on their way to Brașov.
Built according to the plans of the renowned architect Grigore Cerchez, the castle impresses with its carved stone façade and brick-clad interior. With a surface area of 3148 square meters and surrounded by a 3.5 hectare park with waterfalls, fountains, and a cave, Cantacuzino Castle is an oasis of elegance and refinement.
It is not only a historical monument, but also an architectural jewel that combines tradition with modernity, captivating every visitor with its splendor. Explore further the secrets and charm of this fairytale place!
The history of the Cantacuzino Castle
The construction of this impressive building was completed in 1911, according to the plans of the renowned architect Grigore Cerchez, a famous figure in terms of neo-Romanian style.
Built on the site of an old hunting lodge used by the Cantacuzino family on their way to Brasov, the castle reflects the prince’s desire to create a place of refuge and relaxation, harmoniously integrated into the mountain landscape of Zamora. Construction took five years and furnishing another year and a half, so that when it opened in 1911, the castle impressed with its modern facilities, such as electricity, sewage, and drinking water, which not everyone had at that time.
After nationalization in 1948, the building was converted into a sanatorium for the Ministry of the Interior and today houses a museum that attracts many visitors eager to admire this architectural masterpiece.
The castle stands out with an area of approximately 3,000 square meters and eclectic style, blending neo-romanian elements with oriental accents and details of the Italian Renaissance. One of the most impressive rooms is the Grand Ballroom, where portraits of members of the Cantacuzino family and the coats of arms of related families are displayed.
The tragic fate of the Nabab
The history of Cantacuzino Castle hides a story of unfortunate events that reflect the tragic destiny of Prince Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino, nicknamed “Nababul” because of his fortune. Although the castle, completed in 1911, was a crowning achievement of the opulence and refinement of the early 20th century, Cantacuzino’s life was overshadowed by tragic events and tumultuous political decisions.
Cantacuzino was an emblematic figure in Romanian politics and held important positions such as prime minister and judge. However, his power and wealth did not shield him from disillusionment. After the completion of the castle, Cantacuzino suffered a series of personal losses, culminating in his death in 1913 due to pneumonia, just two years after the inauguration of his cherished building. His sudden death left the castle in the hands of the family, who, although they enjoyed its splendor, were soon hit by the troubled times of the early 20th century.
The tragic fate of „The Nabab” did not end there. After nationalization in 1948, the Cantacuzino family lost the castle, which was transformed into a sanatorium by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, with a completely different use from the prince’s original dream. Ironically, the opulence and refinement of the castle have been replaced by the austere functionality of a sanatorium, reflecting the decline of an era of glory.

The structure of the Cantacuzino Castle
Cantacuzino Castle impresses with its complex and elegant structure. Made of carved stone outside and brick inside, with a concrete foundation and tiled roof, the castle is an example of refined architecture. The central pavilion, with a total surface area of 3,148.02 m², dominates the ensemble consisting of four sections: the service pavilion of 403.80 m², the administrative villa of 114.41 m², and the chapel. The pavilion-style architecture, with a quadrangle open to the south, gives the complex a special charm and captivates visitors with its elaborate details.
The interior of the Castle
The interior of the castle is filled with a romantic atmosphere and is adorned with intricate details, such as:
- Romanesque mosaic on the first level;
- Murals painted by Venetian artists;
- Stained-glass windows made of Murano glass;
- Italian glazed ceramics in the main lobby;
- The fireplaces are decorated with polychrome mosaic and gold leaf, made of Albești limestone;
- The carved oak ceilings and doors;
- The oak staircase, ingeniously designed to rest only on the walls;
- The elegant Carrara marble staircase;
- Handrails carved in stone, wrought iron, or wood;
- Elaborate bronze hardware with Parisian ornaments;
- Painted casements and decorative friezes.
In the central pavilion, there is a gallery of murals that are unique in Romania. These murals are painted on Cordoba leather and present the twelve life-size portraits of members of the Cantacuzino family. The Ballroom houses an impressive collection of heraldry, with 27 coats of arms of noble families related to the Cantacuzinos.
The exterior of the Castle
Cantacuzino Castle stands out with its impressive exterior, combining a variety of architectural styles. With a surface area of 3,148 square meters and set in the middle of a vast park, the castle offers an unforgettable experience. Picturesque pathways guide you to an enchanted grotto, where you can admire fountains and waterfalls. The outdoor space is decorated with arches and columns, and the balconies are adorned with decorative railings. Sculptures and reliefs adorn every corner of the castle, creating a fairytale atmosphere that entices you to discover every corner of this special place.
Court and the Church
The castle is surrounded by a vast courtyard, spanning an area of 3.5 hectares. The garden at the base of the palace features three ponds, two of which are decorated with artesian fountains, and the main park path is surrounded by trees in the style of prestigious European parks.
Another highlight of the garden is the anthropic grotto. Between 1935 and 1936, a small wooden chapel dedicated to St. George the Baptist was built in the park. In addition to the courtyard surrounding the castle, the estate also comprises 970 hectares of forest on the Zamora hillside and offers an impressive natural setting.
Cantacuzino Castle, a tourist spot after the movie „Wednesday”
After the debut of the “Wednesday” series, directed by Tim Burton, Cantacuzino Castle has captured public attention as a significant tourist destination. The façade of the castle was completely transformed to fit the scenario of the Nevermore Academy. The actors appreciated the unique atmosphere of the location in Bușteni, Romania, and the castle impressed many, giving them the opportunity to discover the beauty and mystery of this iconic building. Thus, Cantacuzino Castle has become not only a film set but also a tourist attraction that promises to reveal more than the stories on the big screen.
