The history and legend of Caraiman
The legend of Caraiman, deeply rooted in Romanian mythology and traditions, describes the story of a kind-hearted sorcerer who lived in the mountains of the Prahova Valley. Caraiman, a loving and wise father, had many children whom he raised with love and respect for divinity.
As they grew up and began to live among humans, conflicts and desire for wealth corrupted them. Inheritance wars led to tragedy: the lazy children, envious of the success of their industrious brothers, killed the latter in the night. At the sight of the slaughter, Caraiman wept, and his tears formed streams on the mountain. In a desperate attempt to bring the children back to the right path, he was killed by them, and the storm that raged at the time turned the murderers into rocks.
Today, Mount Caraiman bears the memory of this tragic sorcerer, and the mournful sounds of wailing from his enchanted bagpipe on stormy days continue to remind us of his sacrifice.
About the Cross of Heroes on Mount Caraiman

The Heroes of the Nation Cross was built at the initiative of Queen Maria and King Ferdinand I to honor the memory of the fallen heroes of the Western Front in the battles against the Central Powers. It is strategically positioned on the secondary peak of the Caraiman so that it can be admired from great distances.
The actual works were carried out with the help of a dedicated team of young men and specialists, who transported the materials by a combination of rail, carts, and cable cars. Inaugurated on September 14, 1928, the Feast of the Holy Cross, and completed with a reinforced concrete plinth in 1930, the Heroes’ Cross remains a testament to commitment and courage, dominating the mountain landscape and attracting visitors from all over the world.
